In the most literal sense, yes, candles are bad for the environment. They release an assortment of pollutants when they are burned, just like anything else. However, open fireplaces and cars are much more of a concern, along with unclean power plants, dirty manufacturing processes, and a host of other environmental problems. Although it is an excellent idea to be environmentally conscious and to make sound environmental choices, candles should probably not be at the top of your list for reform. Especially if being used for an alternative light source.
That being said, some candles are worse than others, and while you do not need to stop burning candles, you might want to think about more environmentally sound types of candles like beeswax, soy, or vegetable based candles, rather than traditional paraffin candles. With a growing awareness of environmental issues, several candle manufacturers have begun to focus on providing “Green” alternatives which are good for the Earth, making environmentally sound choices very easy for consumers. Here is more information about alternative candles:
Beeswax candles are an all-natural energy source made by bees. The bees pollinate and create beautiful golden beeswax, which creates candles that burn for a long time and don't harm the environment nearly as much.
Soy Wax is non-toxic, burns clean with almost no soot and allows for maximum fragrance throw. Add very long burn times and a large burn pool and you’ve got the ideal container wax. Soy wax candles are a great way to get a lot of non-toxic light for less money.
Vegetables candles are a blend of soy and vegetable waxes.
This vegetable blend burns more evenly than a “soy only” wax. Vegetable candles are a high quality and clean burning candle.
